Description

The Radiation Group is one of the research groups of the Information Processing and Telecommunications Centre, leader in research in antenna design and measurement, development of antenna measurement systems and development of complete communication systems on radio-software platforms. The Group is made up of 8 teaching positions, 3 emeritus professors, and more than 10 researchers.
The Radiation Group collaborates with the main companies in the sector in research projects and participates in research activities within national and international consortia. Within the facilities, the Antenna Testing and Homologation Laboratory (LEHA) stands out, which has several anechoic chambers where antenna systems of different types and frequency bands are characterized.

Summary of Research Services

Antenna Design & Metamaterials: Design and development of passive and active RF components, reconfigurable arrays, and high-frequency systems (ranging from UHF to the THz band).

Communications Systems:Simulation, optimization, and software-radio platforms for 5G, satellite, and mobile communications.

Array Signal Processing: Advanced beamforming and signal processing techniques for antenna arrays.

Main equipment or Facilities

The most advanced facility of the Radiation Group is LEHAUPM, the antenna measurement laboratory. LEHA (“Laboratorio de Ensayos y Homologación de Antenas”) has been working in Antenna Measurements since 1980 for industrial activities, research and educational purposes. LEHA is recognized with ISO 17025 accreditation for antenna measurement.

This facility allows the measurements of antennas in a frequency range from 650 MHz to 220GHz, and it is being updated up to 320GHz, in the several anechoic environments:
- Spherical near field system.
- Compact Antenna Test Range.
- Cylindrical and Planar near field system.
- Millimeter wavelength combined system.

Software, tools or licenses to be applied to Big Science
GR-UPM has experience (and licence) in working with the following Software tools:
• CST Design Studio from Dassault Systèmes: full wave electromagnetic analysis tool.
• GRASP from TICRA: development of reflector antennas.
• Ansys HFSS: 3D High Frequency Simulation Software.

Contracts for Big Science facilities

[ESA] Measurements of the antennas for ESA missions ()
Radiation Group has been collaborating with European Space Agency (ESTEC, ESOC, ...) in different projects and missions. Some of the most relevant works has been the measurements of the antennas for the ESA missions: Mars Express, Venus Express, Solar Orbiter, BepiColombo (to Mercure), Juice (to Jupiter – in progress)… Also, we have measured some of the antennas for Hispasat, ASTRA, Eutelsat, Galileo, … and some other satellites.
