Activity and Skills

Jose María Gallizo SL — Advanced High-Density Concrete & Modular Shielding Solutions for Big Science Facilities.

We manufacture high-density concrete components, modular containment structures and welded steel assemblies, with plants in Spain, Poland and Italy.

Gallizo produces high-density concrete elements reaching densities of up to 4.9 kg/dm³ — among the highest achievable in cement-based materials — as well as steel-concrete hybrid assemblies for applications where combined mechanical performance and radiation attenuation are required. The company's modular system approach allows shielding enclosures and containment structures to be reconfigured or expanded over time, a critical advantage in long-lifecycle scientific facilities such as particle accelerators, neutron sources and nuclear research installations.

Gallizo designed and manufactured one of the caves at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden: a modular shielding enclosure providing a space isolated from radiation and electromagnetic interference. The project required extensive R&D, structural simulation and purpose-built forming systems, demonstrating the company's ability to deliver engineered solutions where standard construction methods are insufficient.

Contracts for Big Science facilities

[ESS] Miracle Cave (2024 - 2026)
Since 2024, Gallizo has been collaborating with the European Spallation Source in Lund project. The miracle Cave which involved the design, manufacture and assembly of a confinement building for a backscattering spectrometer, serving a triple purpose: shielding radiation from the guide end, sample and diffusion system; protecting detectors from external radiation; and housing the experimental areas where scientific activity takes place. This infraestrcuture is a modular enclosure engineered to fully isolate a space from radiation and external interference — with the added advantage of being reconfigurable for future needs.
[ESS BILBAO] Tuning Beam Dump Cave (2016 - 2018)
Between 2016 and 2018, Gallizo designed, manufactured and assembled the shielding system for the Tuning Beam Dump Cave, a critical infrastructure within the ESS Bilbao target station. The project involved the full production of 200 concrete blocks (High Density Concrete and standard density), tailored to strict radiological safety and technical requirements. The team demonstrated a high capacity for responsiveness, advancing design and manufacturing phases to meet project milestones.
